Fika Break

02 Jun 2019

Have you ever heard of the word "fika"? It is a very important word in the Swedish vocabulary. Swedishfood.com defines it as the following; "Fika is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture. Many Swedes consider that it is almost essential to make time for fika every day. It means making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat."

The most important thing to remember is that there are no rules to enjoy a Swedish fika. You can drink coffee, tea, lemonade, soda, you can be with friends, family, work colleagues or completely alone. It's a fika with or without something sweet to eat, although a fika with something sweet to enjoy is always a better fika.

A fews weeks ago Shin and I enjoyed a fika at my grandparent's apartment in Gothenburg, together with my mother. It was a classic fika with just coffee and cinnamon buns. I love that my mother and grand mother are matching the colors of the table cloth and curtains!

It try to visit my grandparents every time I am back in Gothenburg. I'm really lucky to have most of my family gathered in Gothenburg, makes it easy to see them all even if I am only back for a few days. And it is lovely to see my mother and grandmother (on my father's side) enjoying each other's company, even though my mom and dad have been divorced for almost 20 years!
